Conceptual Design of Blended-Wing-Body Aircraft

The department of mechanical engineering at École Polytechnique de Montréal, is working on the optimal design of a blended-wing-body type aircraft. These configurations have the potential to reduce fuel burn significantly compared to traditional tube and wing aircrafts. Our team is developing simultaneously new methods for the conceptual design of these aircrafts, taking into account global aircraft parameters and performances, and 3D aerodynamic optimisation based on parametric CAD models utilizing CAPRI Associative technology provided by CADNexus. The 3D aerodynamic optimization is used to feed the conceptual design methodology to better take into account the important 3D effects in such configurations and arrive at optimal designs. École is the forefront of blended wing body aircraft design, research, and development.
